MUST VISIT SITES
FUSHIFARU THILA
Level: Open Water
Distance from Fushifaru Maldives: 5 minutes by dhoni
The main attraction in the channel of Fushifaru Kandu is the Fushifaru Thila. The entire channel of Fushifaru Kandu has been declared a Protected Marine Area. The Thila lies near the edge of the atoll in the middle of a 500m wide channel that separates the reefs of Fushifaru and Madhiriguraidhoo Faru. The Thila is about 150 metres long and 50 metres wide and rises to about 10 metres at its highest point. The top at both ends is around 16 metres deep. There are cleaner wrasse stations all over the reef, and it is common to spot manta rays. Big schools of humpback and blue-striped snappers, schools of fusiliers, giant trevally, oriental sweetlips, and barracuda are frequent visitors to the Thila.
KUREDU EXPRESS
Level: Open Water
Distance from Fushifaru Maldives: 25 minutes by dhoni
The Kuredu Express is another Protected Marine Area with a long drift dive that covers just about everything a diver would want to see in the waters of the Maldives. There are colourful overhangs on the steep outside reef, while on the eastern corner, between 10 and 22 metres, the reef steps down with terraces and overhangs. The ceiling of the overhangs at 18 metres is covered with soft coral. The channel has small overhangs on either side with plenty of morays, and on the sandy bottom, stingrays are a common sight. Tuna are also abundant in this area, as well as Grey Reef sharks.
SHIPYARD
Level: Advanced Open Water
Distance from Fushifaru Maldives: 35 minutes by dhoni
One of the most famous dive sites in the Lhaviyani atoll is the Shipyard. Located on the east side of Felivaru Kandu, in the channel that separates the islands of Felivaru and Gaaerifaru, are two shipwrecks from the Felivaru factory. One of the wrecks, Skipjack II, has the bow section sitting on the top of the reef, while the second wreck lies 40 metres away on its port side in 28 metres of water. Soft and hard corals have grown in both wrecks, and at 18 metres, you will find a cave with a scorpionfish. You will also find plenty of morays, schools of yellow sweepers, different kinds of reef fish, including boxfish, pufferfish, porcupinefish, napoleons, and much more interesting marine life. This is a dive site not to be missed.
